In Laramba NT, this particular site of Yankirri Jukurrpa (Emu Dreaming) is at Ngarlikurlangu. The Emu travelled to the rockhole at Ngarlikurlangu to find water. This Dreaming story belongs to the Jangala and Jampijinpa men and the Nangala and Nampijinpa women. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings, traditional iconography is used to represent this Dreaming, associated sites and other elements. In the time of the Jukurrpa (dreaming) there was a fight at Ngarlikurlangu between an emu ancestor and Wardilyka (Australian Bustard) ancestors over sharing the bush raisins. There is also a dance for this Jukurrpa that is performed during initiation ceremonies.
Vanessa Nungarrayi Charles comes from Yuendumu Community approximately 300km from Alice Springs in Central Australia. Vanessa paints Emu Dreaming and uses precise dot work to create contemporary artwork.
